Northern Continue Domination of Under 18’s The Northern Region has continued their domination of Underwater Hockey at Under 18 level by retaining the titles in both the Boys and Girls grade. The Northern Girls team were clearly the top team in their grade and were unbeaten throughout the tournament. They were aided by having 6 of the New Zealand U19 Girls team that won gold at the Age Group Games in the Netherlands in July. The Final saw them beat the Central A team 7-1. The well performed mid Northern team finished third after beating the Top of South team 4-0 in the playoff for 3rd and 4th. The final of the Boys grade was a fantastic game and of a very high quality – equal to that of an international game. The Central team went into the final as favourites after beating the Northern team 2-1 in the round robin game. The scores were locked up at 2 all after full time and after 4 minutes of sudden death the Northern team scored to win the title for the sixth consecutive year. The Northern B team played some great hockey and finished 3rd after beating the South Island Boys team in the playoff. All teams are to be congratulated for the high level of hockey played at this tournament and for the spirit in which the games were played. At the conclusion of the tournament, a Boys and Girls Under 18 Development Squads were named consisting of those players that will be Under 18 as at 1 January 2012. Congratulations to those players picked for these squads – it is clear that the future of Underwater Hockey in New Zealand at Age Group level is in a very good state. The tournament results and Development Squads are available to be downloaded below.
